Raymond "Ray" Manchester, also known as the superhero Captain Man, is the deuteragonist in Henry Danger. He is Swellview's savior and guardian of the city, having saved the day many times. But as he grew older, he realized his job started to become "a lot to handle alone" and he "needed a sidekick". Therefore, he hired Henry Hart to be his sidekick, "Kid Danger", and they have been fighting crime together ever since.

He is portrayed by Cooper Barnes in his adult age, Colby Severance in The Danger Begins, and Kale Culley in Back to the Danger: Part 2, both at age 8.

Biography

Background and Origin

The Danger Begins (6)

Ray is densitized

Raymond was born to scientist Carl Manchester and an unnamed mother. He was an ordinary human being just like everybody else, who lived in a town called Swellview. But that would all change in 1989, when one day, 8 year-old Ray, who was skateboarding in his father's laboratory during take your kid to work day, accidentally skated towards his father's indestructible machine, the Trans-Molecular Densitizer, pushing the lever in the process and gaining the power of indestructibility. Despite his extra years of childhood prior to the incident, he never went camping, rode roller coasters, or learned how to ride a bike (he was also pulled out of school by his father, possibly out of fear his newfound powers would harm those around him were he not careful).

His father saw the whole change and to test this theory, he scanned Ray with a detector to see if he really became indestructible. The results were positive and Carl whacked Ray with the detector in the head, with Ray only feeling pain for a second. With his son now indestructible and happy that he is okay, Carl told Ray he would grow up and do special things. Thus Captain Man was born and he would fight crime in the city of Swellview; another motivation for him to fight crime was when a street gang, known as the Wall Dogs, vandalized his playhouse when he was still a boy. In his early days as Captain Man, Ray had a sidekick, Drex Stinklebaum, but after seeing his evil, he and Drex fought, which ended in Drex's defeat.

The Danger Begins (158)

Ray hires Henry as his sidekick

After more than a decade of crime-fighting as a superhero, Ray began to fall out of touch with his secret identity and in 2014, placed an ad calling for a sidekick (under the guise of a regular job). His intention was to train the sidekick well enough to make him a potential successor when he retires. The glimmer of hope would arrive in the form of Henry Hart, a 13-year old boy from the Swellview area. After a quick, brief interview, Ray would chew on a gumball and blow a bubble in Henry's presence, revealing himself as Captain Man. To prove if Henry was the sidekick he needs, he set up a physical test just for him while he faked an injury.

After proving that Henry was trustworthy, Ray agreed to have him as his sidekick and named him Kid Danger. From that day on, Ray and Henry faced various villains like Drex, The Toddler, Dr. Minyak, Time Jerker, Jeff Bilsky, Rick Twitler and others. The duo even received help from their friends Charlotte Page, Schwoz Schwartz, Jasper Dunlop, and Piper Hart. For six years, Ray and Henry protected Swellview from evil until Henry's apparent death to save everyone, and as Henry, Charlotte, and Jasper became lone heroes, Ray and Schwoz opened a school to train the next generation of heroes.

Trivia

  • In an audition tape for Henry Danger, Captain Man's name was originally going to be called Galaxy Glen.
  • He hits on a lot of women.
  • If you look closely at Ray's left cheek, you'll see a faint scar from the fight that took place in the Tears of the Jolly Beetle episode where his face was cut. This is most noticeable during the card game scene in Spoiler Alert, but is also visible in other episodes throughout the series.
  • He has a helicopter known as the Man-Copter that was mentioned in Super Volcano, before making its first full appearance in Danger & Thunder.

  • It is revealed in Hour of Power that he is allergic to nuts, but he still enjoys them.
    • This is seen again in License to Fly, when he plans to eat a peanut butter sandwich despite his allergy. It is possible that this was a goof, however, since no one seemed alarmed or concerned. It is also possible that he is not allergic to peanuts specifically.
  • He prefers crunchy peanut butter.
  • According to his bio, he is currently 6'0.
  • He is able to play the electric guitar, as shown in Let's Make a Steal.

    • However, in Dodging Danger he puts Schwoz's super-powered glove on his left hand and uses that hand to throw dodgeballs, but this could just be a continuity error.
  • Captain Man does not have good aim when it comes to using gun-like weapons, such as when he seemingly shot the Space Bug (but it managed to survive) and when he kept firing at Schwoz who was hanging on the roof but missed every time, and when he once tried shoot a fly with his gun, he missed the fly and instead shot a hole in the elevator door.

  • Ray loves playing the game Sky Whale (from Game Shakers).
  • In Saturday Night Lies, he says that if he has a daughter, he wants to name her Marable.

  • He tells everyone that he's 36 when he's really 37 (from Part 1: A New Evil).
  • It is revealed in Knight & Danger, that he has an aunt who was an amateur lion tamer.

Portrayed By

Cooper Barnes

Raymond Esther "Ray" Manchester, also known as the superhero Captain Man, is the main protagonist in Danger Force. He was the savior and local superhero of Swellview and the trainer of the Danger Force. He is a continued character from Henry Danger, portrayed by Cooper Barnes.

Background and Origin

Raymond was born to scientist Carl Manchester and an unnamed mother. He was an ordinary human being just like everybody else, who lived in a town called Swellview. But that would all change when one day, 8-year-old Ray, who was skateboarding in his father's laboratory during take your kid to work day, accidentally skated towards his father's Trans-molecular Densitizer, pushing the lever in the process and gaining the power of indestructibility. Thus Captain Man was born and he would fight crime in the city of Swellview. He eventually realized he could not do so alone, employing a sidekick, Henry Hart, aka, Kid Danger. They fought crime together for about 5 years before Kid Danger's "death".

He never went camping, rode roller coasters, or learned how to ride a bike (he was also pulled out of school by his father, possibly out of fear his newfound powers would harm those around him were he not careful). Ray was also bullied by Debbie, who constantly tickled him and made him go to the bathroom, nicknamed him "Tickle Wazz". One motivation for him to fight is when a street gang known as the Wall Dogs vandalized his playhouse when he was still a boy. Also Ray had an imaginary friend named Bubbles, who "died" by an "electric shark".

History

Villains' Night (54)

Ray working with the Danger Force.

To continue fighting crime, Ray and Schwoz Schwartz opened the Swellview Academy for the Gifted to train Mika Macklin, Miles Macklin, Chapa De Silva and Bose O'Brian to be superheroes known as the Danger Force and operate from the Man's Nest. Since then, Ray and the kids have faced villains like The Toddler, Jeff Bilsky, Krampus, Frankini, Take-Out and many others. Regularly on various missions, Ray lets the Danger Force take on the villains while he loses focus. While working with the Danger Force, Ray formed a friendship with the four kids, helping them protect their identities, teaching them about their powers, and testing their trust, although he mostly argued with them.

Henry and Ray share a hug

Ray hugging Henry.

Ray would remain nostalgic for his past days when he was accompanied by Henry as Kid Danger until eventually, Henry returned to Swellview to protect himself from Blackout and have fun with Ray, who was happy to see his best friend. Every time Henry returned, Ray received his help in combating big threats like his former sidekick Drex Stinklebaum and Rick Twitler, but regularly Henry returned to have fun with Ray. Despite their lack of friendship, Ray began to respect the children as he did with Henry and helping them with their personal problems when they were at risk of their secret identities being revealed and accepting their decision to be at Swellview High School instead of SW.A.G.

Ray leaves the Nest with Credenza

Ray retires as Captain Man and leaves the Nest with his fiancée, Credenza.

Eventually fell in love with Credenza Fudgers, the mother of his former enemy, Buddy Fudgers. The relationship between Ray and Credenza made Ray begin to think about a normal life with his girlfriend and as a father to Buddy, beginning a search for a heart-shaped diamond, with whom he would propose to Credenza. Before denying love, Ray was able to learn to forgive, forming a friendship with Drex and proposing to Credenza. After four years fighting crime with the Danger Force and the defeat of The Cell's Comet Monster, Ray decided to retire to live with Credenza on a boat, ceasing to be Captain Man and handing over protection of Swellview to his sidekicks, now converted into real superheroes.

Description & Personality

CaptainMan

Ray's alter-ego, Captain Man.

Ray/Captain Man has brown hair, blue eyes, and a strong build. He is immature, yet sarcastic, witty, and funny. He has a fun spirit, a big ego and likes to be romantic. He tends to be easily distracted when he is a superhero and destroyed various art objects, as well as sometimes not listening to his friends. As shown on several occasions, he hates to lose and wants things to go his way. He is shown to get sensitive when his former sidekick is mentioned. When not in uniform, Ray wears casual clothing such as long-sleeved shirts or short-sleeved, jeans, and sneakers. His hair is normal in his civilian form.

As Captain Man, he wears a blue, red, and silver suit with yellow lining and a symbol on his chest resembling a hurricane, tilted. On his face, he wears a blue mask with a gold line on the top. He wears a black utility belt with his symbol on the buckle. He wears black and red boots and red gloves with black fingers and knuckles and yellow lining. His hair is groomed to the right side. Being Captain Man, he is often irresponsible and rarely takes his job as a superhero seriously, being jealous of those who surpass him like Monsieur Man.

When he started dating Credenza, Ray began to mature and think about having a normal life with her and Buddy, but his superhero job prevented him from doing so and he was helped by the Danger Force to learn to forgive, making amends with Drex, wanting to be a father to Buddy, understanding his friends better, and ask Credenza to marry him. Believing he could be happy with Credenza, Ray opted to give up being Captain Man and start a family with her, leaving the Danger Force in charge of the city.

Ray is also afraid of abandonment because he likes having Schwoz by his side after Henry, Charlotte and Jasper left and is sad when the Danger Force doesn't want to be in SW.A.G., but in a normal school and at the end of the day, Ray confesses his deep feelings, being comforted by his friends. Since the Danger Force performed several missions without him and defeated the Comet Monster, Ray finally respected them as real superheroes and retired to be happy with the reform of Credenza.
